This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes the data contents of the Notice of Power of Attorney Transaction Set (157) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. This bi-directional transaction set can be used to notify entities of the existence of a power of attorney and to provide information as to its applicability. The transaction set may also be used to acknowledge powers of attorney or their cancellation.

    1. To identify dependencies among and the content of hierarchically related groups of data segments

      HL01 (Hierarchical ID Number) will be assigned sequentially within the hierarchy starting with one and incremented by one for each HL segment.
      HL03 (Hierarchical Level Code) may only contain the codes: AG (Agent Level) and PR (Principal Level), where the Agent is the party to whom Power of Attorney is being granted, modified, or revoked, and the Principal is the party on behalf of whom Power of Attorney is being granted, modified, or revoked. The Principal Level is always subordinate to the Agent Level.
      Each transaction set must contain at least one HL loop at the Agent Level. Each HL loop at the Agent Level must have at least one subordinate HL loop at the Principal Level.
    2. NM1 Loop Mandatory

      1. To supply the full name of an individual or organizational entity

        The NM1 segment describes the Agent to whom Power of Attorney is being granted, modified, or revoked, when occuring within an HL loop at Agent Level. The NM1 loop describes the Principal, who is the party on whose behalf Power of Attorney is being granted, modified, or revoked, when used within an HL loop at Principal Level.
