X12 355 U.S. Customs Acceptance/Rejection
This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes the data contents of the U.S. Customs Acceptance/Rejection Transaction Set (355) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. The transaction set can be used by U.S. Customs to report errors and discrepancies discovered in the U.S. Customs transaction sets to ocean carriers, terminal operators, port authorities and service centers.

Marks and numbers used to identify a shipment or parts of a shipment
MARKS AND NUMBERS
This data element is used to report Marks and Numbers. It is mandatory, as it is
also used to report ITNs (Internal Transaction Numbers) and/or
exemptions/exclusions. Diagrams, drawings, figures and other representations
appearing on packaging may be described in writing. The exporting carrier must
include the Internal Transaction Numbers (ITN) or exemption/exclusion
statements, for each container in the Marks and Numbers data element in
“N1003” (Marks and Numbers Data Element), one per data element (see
Appendix D to 15 CFR Part 30, Foreign Trade Regulations). A prefix of “ITN”
with a trailing space character should be used if the ITN is to be entered or
“EXC” with a trailing space character if an exemption statement is to be entered.
“EXC” with a trailing space should be the prefix used for all non-ITN values
except Marks and Numbers. The Marks and Numbers data, if any, needs to be
entered, with no prefix, one per data element, after all ITN or
exemption/exclusion data has been entered.
